ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. ? Seattle University's men's golf team beat South Dakota State 5-0 and host Cal Poly 3-2 on Thursday to reach the finals of the Lamkin Grip Match Play Challenge.
Rob Siebly, Paul Pavlos and Preston Matchett each won two matches at Cypress Ridge Golf Course for the Redhawks. Siebly had a particularly good day, winning 6 and 5, and 2 and 1. Matchett won 4 and 2, and 2 and 1. Pavlos won twice by 2 and 1 scores.
Seattle U. meets Fresno State for the championship on Friday. Fresno State advanced by beating Utah State and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Other golf
Western Washington junior Claire Rachor shot a 1-over par 72 for a share of the first-round lead, helping the Vikings' women's team to second place after 18 holes of the Augustana University Spring Fling in Cathedral City, Calif.
WWU (313) is six shots behind St. Edward's, Texas, in the 10-team event. Western's Alexandria Taylor (79) is tied for 10th. The tournament concludes Friday.
Softball
Boise State swept Seattle University in a doubleheader in the SpringHill Suites Invitational in Boise, 9-0 and 8-3.
In the five-inning opener, Boise State's Katie Engelbrecht, a freshman catcher from Woodinville, hit a solo homer for the final run. In Game 2, the Redhawks led 3-0 on Bubba Morrow's two-run single and Allegra Wilde's solo homer before Boise State rallied with an eight-run fourth inning.
Seattle (6-13) plays single games against New Mexico and Texas-San Antonio on both Friday and Saturday.
